Today, I wrote up a natural beauty set, the Korres Golden Goddess Collection, available from Sephora, for Pretty By Nature. While there peeking around the Korres “shop” I found the Quince Candle Gift Set. I love candles. Have I mentioned that before?
Quince Candle Gift Set - $57.50
The Quince candle is a long-lasting, clean-burning, soy candle. It lasts for 50 hours. The holder is cute – trees in gold, adorable, but not too showy. Korres offers a little advice to users:
*To prevent excessive smoke, trim the wick to a quarter inch before lighting.
*Don’t burn the candle for more than 4 hours [...]

Fekkai’s luxury hair care products will now be available at mass. Photo: fekkai.com
Looks like former BFF’s Sephora and Fekkai have had a spat and broken up.
In today’s WWD, the luxury hair care brand announced that its classic products will roll out in mass drugstores over the next year – and Sephora immediately confirmed it will drop the line.
Fekkai’s classic products – which include the Glossing, Full Volume and Technician Color lines – will reportedly become available at Walgreens and Target. The higher end Fekkai Advanced line will continue to sell at prestige retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
One leading analyst said parent company P&G’s strategy is most likely, “Do we let Sephora be angry so we lose $20 million in business but we gain a possible $50 million [in the mass market]?”
Yet there’s also talk in the industry that Fekkai could end up like Nexxus – another prestige brand that entered the mass market in 2008, and has since suffered the commodification of a cheapened image.
“It’s almost as if they don’t understand the pro hair care market at mass today. It’s off by 8 percent. That’s because [consumers] don’t want to pay that much for hair care, shampoo and styling products now. Fekkai will have to convince the customer to pay $20 for a shampoo,” one mass industry insider said.
But Fekkai has already thought about that. Using the scan data of retailers like Target, Fekkai will send pre-launch direct mailers to shoppers already spending $15 and more on haircare, customized with product samples that correspond with what the women have already been buying.
“I love to go to Target and Whole Foods, as well as Hermes. I’m very excited to go broader and bring an upscale experience,” says Julie Woffington, Managing Director at Frédéric Fekkai.
So can a chic brand have her cake and eat it too? Only time will tell.

Tarina Tarantino has created a new line of makeup for Sephora. Photo: Getty Images
Last night, at a fashionable gallery in downtown Manhattan shrouded in pink, Sephora debuted its latest exclusive collection — Sephora Presents Tarina Tarantino, a makeup line created by accessories designer Tarina Tarantino.
Famous for her whimsical designs, optimistic outlook and shocking pink locks, Tarantino applied her sparkly sensibilities to a line of 13 products for the beauty retailer, launching in store and online in February 2010.
Tarina Tarantino is the first launch under the “Sephora Presents” umbrella, an initiative that the company believes will redefine the beauty landscape by giving a voice to unique brands that fall outside of the traditional beauty mold.
“Tarina’s lifestyle transcends into her jewelry and into her makeup line,” Margarita Arriagada, Sephora’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising, told StyleList before introducing Tarantino to the crowd of editors. “We’re excited to bring serious cosmetics to the market from someone who really understands beauty. Tarina is it; this is what she lives and breathes every single day.”
A former model, Tarantino was a makeup artist for M.A.C Cosmetics before delving into the sparkling jewelry she is known for. “Fourteen years ago, when I started my accessories brand I had to give up a career that I loved,” said Tarantino. “I really fell in love with beauty.”
She created her Sephora line to fill gaps she saw on the shelves. “This collection is made of the formulations I’ve dreamed of having, and the products I want but can’t find in the marketplace.”
The full face collection features items for the face, eyes, lips and cheeks in a wide range of colors and finishes. High pigment, pressed Eye Dream Hypershadow eye shadow, $19 is available in 24 shades. Dollskin Powder, $32, has micronized particles for an imperceptibly perfect finish.
On the innovation front, our personal favorite product is Sparklecity Shimmer Dust, which packs airy shimmer into a glamorous, old-fashioned perfume atomizer; when spritzed it skims the skin and hair with a flirty dusting of sparkles.

This set from Stila is one of the exclusive offerings in the Zappos Beauty section. Photo: Courtesy of Zappos.com
Zappos.com has made a quiet entry into the beauty world.
For the past year, while nobody was looking, the no-frills shopping site first famous for its shoe selection slowly filled its beauty basket to include industry powerhouses and niche brands alike. Color cosmetics brands like Stila, Lola Cosmetics, Pop Beauty, skincare companies such as Ahava and MD Skincare, and a smattering of small hair brands have all signed on with both regular and exclusive product offerings.
The customer-oriented website created the beauty section in anticipation of Holiday 2009, which marks its full-fledged unveiling.
Zappos plans to separate itself from competitors like Sephora.com and Beauty.com by offering fast, free shipping options to deliver the ease of online shopping with the immediate gratification of brick and mortar stores. “Zappos.com feels that our main competitors are brick and mortar locations since their products are available immediately,” says Eileen Lewis, Director of Fashion Strategy.
Most other online retailers only offer free shipping over a set dollar amount or during special promotions, so it will be interesting to see if clients bite, as this consumer-friendly option becomes better known.
StyleList caught up Lewis over email to get the scoop on the new beauty section.
StyleList: Why did Zappos decide to get into the beauty category?
Lewis: Zappos.com thought that Beauty would be a natural extension for completing a wardrobe- fashion doesn’t just belong in a closet! We want Zappos.com to be a one stop shop for any shopper looking for the fashion lifestyle and customers were looking for the category extension on our site.
StyleList: Which retail websites do you consider to be your main competitors?
Lewis: Zappos.com feels that our main competitors are brick and mortar locations since their products are available immediately. However, with our fast, free shipping options, Zappos.com is bridging the gap between the time you place an order and the time you receive it.
StyleList: How does your shopping experience and product strategy differ from your competitors – how will you make your beauty section stand out against the Sephora.com’s and Beauty.com’s of the web-sphere?
Lewis: We always offer free shipping and a 365-day return policy to ensure our customers are happy with their products. Zappos.com always stands for service and selection allowing our customers to shop for all their needs in one place.
StyleList: What brands and or specific products do you think your clients will be most excited about?
Lewis: Zappos.com is really excited about offering our customers a wide selection in cosmetics, skincare, bath lines, hair care and fragrance. We also have a great selection of giftable cosmetic and fragrance sets for holiday.

Michael Lohan was receiving money for securing paying gigs on behalf of Jon Gosselin, he says, a fact that could doom Jonny Boy in his legal battle with TLC.
Jon Gosselin entered into a business relationship with Hailey Glassman, Mike Heller and Michael Lohan to earn money, all in violation of his TLC contract.
Though unsigned, the contract led to Jon being paid for outside appearances that violated his TLC deal, Michael Lohan himself told the celeb gossip site.
The document and the payments Jon ended up getting could be a smoking gun in the breach of contract lawsuit brought against the father of eight by TLC.
According to the deal, “TR” is entitled to certain fees resulting from business transactions on behalf of Gosselin and then-girlfriend Hailey Glassman.
“I brought Jon to the table so I told Michael Heller we needed an agreement. He said no problem,” Lohan said, explaining the origin of the document.

Get ready to say BYE to a lot of money, Jon.
“We were representing him … I brought Jon Gosselin to Mike Heller, so Michael therefore had an obligation to pay me a percentage of what he made.”
TR is a joint venture of Lohan’s company and Mike Heller’s company. Heller never signed the deal after his dad Mark, Jon’s lawyer, advised him not to.
Regardless, in what is sure to be strong evidence for TLC, who subpoenaed Lohan, says he got paid for deals Jon made money from. Probably illegally.
Heller “was paying me all along, which basically proves I have a deal. Why was he paying me checks and giving my wife and my son checks?” Lohan said.
Lohan said some payments he got for helping get Jon gigs was in cash.
“A lot of it was cash, so I would imagine that there were a lot of things I wasn’t paid for too,” the father of Lindsay and Ali said. “We’re going to find out.”
The fact that a paper trail exists on side business deals may turn out to be strong evidence for TLC against Jon. The tool’s best shot, according to his $5 million countersuit, is to claim his original deal is unreasonable. Stay [...]

As we previously reported, Victoria’s Secret is grooming five models — Chanel Iman, Candice Swanepoel, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lindsay Ellingson and Emanuela de Paula — to be the new bombshells of the brand (see them in the above gallery).
In order to find out what it takes to be recruited into the sexy VS squad, StyleList caught up with four of these fresh faces as they lounged in their sparkly VS robes before they hit the runway at the celeb-studded Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
“It’s really exciting to be the new face of VS,” Ellingson, a California native, said while hanging in her makeup chair. “I’ve always wanted to work for them and it’s my dream job.”
As for pre-show nerves, Ellingson says she zaps them away by conjuring happy thoughts: “I think of something funny or my dogs,” she says. “Just something that makes me happy.” And she gets rid of pre-show jiggle with an odd secret weapon.
“I do dance classes, but I’m really big on butt crunches,” she says. “I feel like that’s my fitness secret. You lay down on the floor looking up and push your pelvis up and down. It’s easy to do a 100-200 of those and it’s such an easy workout.”
“For women, what you really want to focus on is your abs and your butt. And it does both of those, plus the backs of your thighs. You don’t run out of breathe and you can do it while watching TV, although it might look a bit weird.”
Other secrets the bombshells revealed included what they really wear — or don’t wear — as undergarments.
“I don’t wear bras very often,” admitted pouty lip British model Huntington-Whiteley. “But I always wear hot underwear — something sexy or cute. I have to have good panties on!”
South African Swanepoel, on the other hand, likes to keep things simple.
“It depends how I feel,” she says. “But there’s really nothing better than putting a pair of those cotton underwear on after a long day of shooting.”
And even though she was about to hit the stage in pretty much nothing, all of the underwear talk had first time VS model Chanel Iman cringing.
“I’m actually a little bit nervous to walk without pants! It’s a little embarrassing!” she said. “I’m only 18 and it’s my first time, but if I have confidence, I think that embarrassment will go away.”
Stomping down the runway in wings and thongs, confident would definitely be the word to describe how all of these four ladies appeared at the show.
To see them in all of their VS glory, check out StyleList’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show coverage and tune into CBS on December 1 to watch the complete show.
