Is There Really a Growing Small-Boob-Pride Trend?

Sep

In an article in the Style section last week, the New York Times claimed that pride among women with more discreet tatas is suddenly on the rise:

Ellen Shing, the owner of Lula Lu, a Web site and boutique in San Mateo, Calif., that cater to AAA- to A-cup sizes…says that while a small number of her customers come in looking for padded bras and tell her, “Make me as big as you can,” the majority “don’t want to supersize themselves.”

A fascinating trend! And it doesn’t end there — it appears that these newfangled “social networking sites” have latched on as well:

These days, it’s not uncommon for women with modest busts to flaunt what little they’ve got with a deep V-neck cut or a halter top. And more small-chested ladies seem to be openly celebrating their look on Twitter, Facebook and various blogs.

In an article addressing the so-called trend, writer Jack Shafer on Slate.com contends that no such trend exists, and that the NYT was kind of making it all up:

The problem with these findings is that the Flat Chested and Proud of It! group has 93 members. Flat Chested Girls United has 337. That only 2,356 of 500,000,000 Facebook members have chosen to “like” the “flat chested girls are prettier!!” page would seem to argue against the very existence of flat-chested pride.

But I would argue that the only thing that’s bogus about the NYT article is that it’s not really anything new for grown-up women to love their small breasts. Most women over the age of 18 recognize that their sexual partners just like boobs, period, and it doesn’t really matter how big they are. Plus, not having to wear a bra is awesome, not to mention the fact that tons of fashion is best suited for women with small chests. And also, have you ever seen a model? You know, those women upon whom our societal beauty standards are based? Ever noticed their tits?

Yeah.

As to the Facebook groups…I mean, everything has a Facebook group. The difference “these days” isn’t that women with small knockers are more proud, it’s that anyone from uncles of girls to people with six toes can create an outlet to be loud and proud. Which is great. But I don’t think it speaks to a new feeling so much as a new platform for that feeling.

Talking Modeling with Ann & Kirby Kenny

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Steff Yotka |  Category:Fashion, marc jacobs

No you’re not seeing double. Modeling’s current stars are twins Ann and Kirby Kenny.

Even though AW10 was their first season doing shows, combined they walked for such industry bigwigs as Prada, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Celine, Proenza Schouler, and Burberry, just to name a few. Now they’re gearing up for SS11, which is sure to be another hit.

Click through for an interview with Ann and Kirby about their already-incredible careers, and what’s next.

How did you get into modeling?
Kirby: One day Ann and I went into the woods behind our house and took Polaroids of each other. That night we sent them into DNA and soon after set up a meeting and signed with them right away.

What was the change like going from regular high school girls to major international models?
Kirby: At first it was a little strange being away from my friends and out of my usual schedule. But the whole change has been extremely quick and very exciting!
Ann: It was a very strange world that I entered, but I adjusted fairly quickly. It’s been an amazing opportunity and I’m still taking it in.

How did your parents and friends at home react to your immediate success?
Kirby: They all have a really hard time believing it, but everyone is so excited. I’ll always get a comment like ‘I saw you here or there’ or whatever, so that is kind of funny.
Ann: They could identify with the brands that they knew so they felt like they were a part of it in a way.

Ann walking Prada AW10

What is it is like working together on shoots? Do you request to be shot together or do clients request it?
Ann: We don’t request to be shot together but I do love shooting with Kirbs. We’re so natural together and I think clients are interested in how we’ll interact with each other in front of the camera.
Kirby: We don’t request to be together on shoots, but we work together an awful lot. I love working with Ann because we’re so comfortable with each other and I think that translates onto the camera.

Sibling rivalry: has it gotten better or worse modeling together?
Kirby: We’ve never been competitive, so there haven’t been any fist fights or anything, haha.
Ann: It’s funny, it has actually remained exactly the same!

Did you choose to have different hair colors to differentiate yourselves from each other, and how did you choose who went blonde and who went dark brunette?
Kirby: It’s funny because a week before we took the pictures to send in I bleached my hair blonde…. I don’t know why, impulse I guess. Ann had gone dark a while before that. So when we showed up to DNA they liked the colors and decided to keep it.

How do you feel that your looks differ?
Ann: We’ve always had similar features, but not identical ones. I enjoy having another version of myself with an alternate perspective.
Kirby: We both like the fact that we look similar, but not completely the same. What looks good on me may not look as good on Ann, or vice versa. So as a result, I think it gives us more versatility to be able to stand on our own, or together, and both will be interesting.

Kirby walking Marc Jacobs AW10

What were your favorite moments of the AW10 shows?
Ann: I love when i get the opportunity to open shows, so Proenza Schouler, Pringle of Scotland, and Richard Nicoll.
Kirby: I really enjoyed walking for Marc Jacobs because that was my first big show in New York. And Celine, because Phoebe Philo is one of my favorite designers.

What’s on the horizon for SS11?
Kirby: Hopefully many shows and a good time.
Ann: More work and happiness, I hope.

You’ve shot with a lot of big names like Hedi Slimane and recently booked the Proenza Schouler AW10 campaign. What experiences stand out for you?
Ann: I think every experience is as memorable as the last. Although some things I have done were more important for my career, I remember every moment all the same.
Kirby: I think every photo shoot stands out for me. But definitely shooting with Hedi Slimane was unforgettable, he is so cool and relaxed. It didn’t even feel like a photo shoot, it was just a chill time. And Proenza was great too. Ann and I both love Jack and Laz; the whole day was a great time.

Any dream jobs you’re both hoping for?
Kirby: There is no specific job I would love. But I strive to make the best photos I can, work with all the talented people in this industry, and eventually have an impact on the modeling/fashion world.
Ann: I just want to do as much as I can, and the best I can. I want to be happy doing it.

Ann & Kirby in Vogue Russia August 2010

If you weren’t models what would you want to do?
Ann: I’m fascinated with film, I will eventually pursue directing, definitely.
Kirby: I am a movie junkie. So I would definitely be working on films, whether it be editing, directing, but probably both.

What are your favorite magazines?
Ann: I really love Russh, Interview, and Another Magazine. Whenever I look at their editorials I want to be in them.
Kirby: I love Russh, Tush, Another, LOVE, and Interview. I always get inspired after looking at the stories.

What’s on your iPod?
Ann: So much! I’ve been really into Radiohead, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pink Floyd, and Sufjan Stevens.
Kirby: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Sufjan Stevens, The xx, The Cure, The Cramps, and The White Stripes.

by Hedi Slimane

Where are your favorite places to shop?
Kirby: Vintage anything anywhere.
Ann: Any vintage store in any city.

Who are your favorite models?
Kirby:Sasha Pivovarova, Natalia Vodianova, Raquel Zimmermann, Edita Vilkeviciute, Kim Noorda, Alyona Osmanova…to name a few, hahah.
Ann: I am so inspired by Natalia Vodianova and Twiggy.

Miranda Kerr and Her Puppy Get the 3D Treatment for Vogue Italia’s September 2010 Issue

Aug
No Comments   Posted by fashionologie |  Category:Fashion

>> Miranda Kerr hinted that she had an upcoming Vogue Italia cover in the pipeline, and of all the issues to score, she landed the September 2010 issue. The collaboration with Steven Meisel comes as no surprise, considering how frequently the two have been linked together recently.

The cover (which features Kerr and her Yorkshire terrier Frankie) and accompanying editorial spread - which was likely shot when Kerr was around two to three months pregnant - is part of Vogue Italia's September 3D theme. The issue comes with a pair of 3D glasses, as another editorial inside is also 3D: The Scent of the Future shot by Tim Walker. Vogue Italia is not the first Vogue to try out the 3D concept  - Isabeli Fontana appeared in 3D in Vogue Mexico's April issue.

Who Is Your Favorite Model, and Why?

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Lilit Marcus |  Category:Fashion

A lot of people have favorite models. But what is it about a particular woman that makes you always want to look at pictures of them or buy products that they endorse? Everyone has their own conscious or subconscious reasons. So let me tell you about my favorite model and we can go from there.

When I was in high school, I was really skinny. That may sound awesome to some people, but I grew up in the South, where the ideal female figure was curvy and buxom. Compared to the pretty girls at my school, I looked like a boy. For awhile, I ate protein bars and junk food and tried to fatten myself up in any way I could, without realizing how hard it was to completely change your basic body type. But the first time I saw a picture of Stella Tennant in Vogue (probably when she was the face of Chanel), something changed. Here was this woman with a slender, boyish figure and angular facial features who was not only beautiful but being photographed for one of the greatest fashion magazines in the world.

Stella Tennant isn’t my favorite model because I look like her. We bear a very slight passing resemblance, but no one will ever stop me in the street thinking I am her. For one thing, she’s about six inches taller than me. My eyes are brown; hers blue.  But my affection for her comes from the fact that she’s like an extreme, much more beautiful version of myself. There’s no chance of me ever getting a makeover and looking like Bar Refaeli or Veruschka. But in a wonderful fantasy universe, it’s somewhat more plausible that I could be Stella Tennant someday – it would require a haircut and maybe a nose ring, but not plastic surgery. That’s fashion escapism at its best – I may not look like this woman, but I don’t look completely unlike her either.

Do you have a favorite model? If so, who is it and why?

Crystal Renn on Her New Chanel Campaign

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Leah Chernikoff |  Category:Fashion

Perennial model-in-the-spotlight Crystal Renn stars in Chanel’s newest campaign for the reopening of the brand’s SoHo store, and we got her reaction to the campaign just minutes after she had seen it herself.

“I’m absolutely freaking out,” she told us. “Working with Chanel has been my dream forever. As long as I’ve been working as a model I’ve been thinking about Chanel and working towards Chanel and this campaign is the proudest moment of my life.”

While Renn’s most recent campaigns (including that notorious retouched shoot for nonprofit Passion For Fashion) have brought attention to the so-called “plus size” model’s shifting body size, her latest print work for Chanel focuses on the model’s gorgeous face while a sultry Baptiste Giabiconi reclines topless in the background.

Renn believes her latest coup speaks to positive changes in the industry.

“I think the fashion industry is changing and is more open to a new ideal,” says Renn. “It’s about a personality and a moment captured..it’s not about body size it’s about talent and effort…I hope the industry sees this [campaign] as an example of that.”

As for that retouching scandal that landed her on the Today show? “Retouching happens,” says Renn. “It’s happened to other actresses and models and a lot of times models won’t come forward and they’re even relieved to be retouched. Don’t get me wrong, I love retouching but I”m very proud of my body and to portray me as a size zero or a two when I’m a ten, that’s inaccurate and I was concerned with how people who look up to me would see those ads.”

But she’s moved on. This is the second time Renn has worked with Lagerfeld (she walked in his 2011 resort show in Saint Tropez), and she sees no reason why the partnership won’t continue.

“Karl is a genius,” Renn says. “He’s a Virgo so we’re compatible and we got on really well.”

For the campaign, which was shot in a studio in Paris a few months ago, Lagerfeld asked Renn and Giabiconi to envision themselves as lovers in a glamorous movie. “He said, ‘You’re not a model right now, you’re an actress,’…the only difference between modeling and acting is that models have one second to tell a story and actresses have two hours.”

And acting as if Giabiconi was her lover was, shockingly, not so hard to do. “He is the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen hands down,” Renn gushes. “I remember being on set and trying not to stare but staring at him methodically nonetheless to try to figure out how perfection in a male looks. It’s insane when you look at him. ”

So, we had to ask, is the next step for Renn acting?

“I haven’t been actively seeking acting roles but if the right opportunity came up, absolutely,” says Renn. The right part for Renn would be something dark and intense and challenging–no RoCo’s for this chick. We’d shell out $12 to see her on the big screen.

Mia Farrow just testified at the Hague at former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor’s trial, and she contradicts what Naomi Campbell said earlier about the supposed blood diamonds Taylor gave her as a gift. Campbell claimed that she was given a couple of loose dirty stones, bit Farrow says that Campbell was given a ginormous diamond.
