Last night, Crushable editor Erin Carlson hit up an event for GLAAD in New York. She was nice enough to get some fashion goss for us while she was there. She spoke with Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen of The Real Housewives of New York, and the twosome talked about their favorite designers.

Alex: [My favorite designer is] anybody creative.  We like to wear people whom we know, like Walter Baker, who’s a friend of ours who we go out to dinner with. Of course we wear his clothes.

Simon: His clothes or him?

Alex: No I wear his clothes… Malan Breton is another one who’s amazing. We also like bigger designers like Roberto Cavalli. Or I love the stuff that Marc Jacobs did for Louis Vuitton. You mix it up.

Simon: “We’ve had a chance, in season three particularly, to bring exposure to small designers. I wore a lot of John Bartlett and John Barlett’s not so small.

[Your sunglasses are] a burka for the eyes?
A burka for a man. I’m a little shortsighted, and people, when they’re shortsighted, they remove their glasses and then they look like cute little dogs who want to be adopted.- Karl Lagerfeld

Karl, sunglasses or no, I think you are fashion’s labradoodle.

Irish Designer Paul Costelloe Gets His Own Stamp

Irish-born fashion designer Paul Costelloe now has his very own commemorative postage stamp in his native country. However, the honor didn’t come without a little bit of controversy. Costelloe, who got into the fashion industry in London, once famously said that Irish women “wouldn’t know style if it tottered up to them on 10-inch heels.” Perhaps that’s why the stamp used a photo of one of Costelloe’s designs, rather than a picture of the man himself.

To his credit, Costelloe said “As an Irishman, having your name on a stamp is one of the greatest honours to be bestowed on anyone.”

10 Male Fashion Designers More Dateable Than A Vampire

Jul

We realize that a great many people have enjoyed our 10 Vampires More Dateable than Edward Cullen Gallery. We learned that you have strong feelings about attractive , unavailable men and also, that while Buffy has been over approximately forever, you still lust after Angel (too bad Jenny Calendar can’t weigh in on that topic because Angel killed her.) Anyhow, we also realized that male fashion designers have a lot in common with vampires. For instance:

They are covered in random body glitter spritzes as a result of helping the models prepare and are therefore sparkly.

They look good in black

They rarely go out in the daytime

They do not often eat solids, or at least not bread solids

They will generally not have sex with you. Not because of a curse. Because they’re gay.

They are actually vampires (in the case of Karl Lagerfeld, only).

Here are ten we think you should consider dating before you wed yourself to a creature of the night.

  • Marc Jacobs
  • Tom Ford
  • Yves St. Laurent
  • Phillip Lim
  • Alexander McQueen
  • Carmen Marc Valvo
  • Ralph Lauren
  • Jason Wu
  • Roberto Cavalli
  • Karl Lagerfeld

Will China Produce Their Own Karl Lagerfeld?

Jul

That is the question posited in a Forbes article about the textile industry in China.

The answer, of course, is no.

First of all, Karl Lagerfeld is a glorious rare flower that was sent from the heavens, and no one else could ever be Karl.

But, to be more serious for just a sec, I really hate the “X will be the new Y” school of thinking about fashion. China doesn’t need a Chinese version of Karl – they need a Chinese designer who will be innovative and revolutionary and just themselves. Being a new version of someone who already exists isn’t interesting. I hope China produces a wonderful modern designer who is something we’ve never seen before in any other country.

Marc Jacobs Is Magic, Grants Cancer Patient’s Fashion Wish

In case there were people in the world who weren’t already familiar with the genius of Marc Jacobs, here’s another reason for his sainthood. California teen Jennifer Ridgeley, who is suffering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, told the Kids Wish Network that her dream was to meet Marc Jacobs. The organization hooked up Jennifer with a shopping spree, a free trip to New York, and a meeting with Marc himself. (There’s a photo of the two at left.) And this was no “shake hands and move on” celebrity-meeting experience:

As for meeting Marc Jacobs, I can’t even put into words how incredible it was,” said Ridgley. “We started by touring his studio beginning in the Marc Jacobs collection show room and walking all the way through where they put everything together and even into the storage rooms full of organized boxes of buttons and various materials. It’s so neat thinking about how that’s where everything starts. After the tour, we watched a recording of the Fall 2010 collection runway show which was awesome, getting to talk to Marc about it while watching it. After this, we hopped into a taxi and headed over to the Marc by Marc Jacobs store to do some shopping, which was so much fun. I was in heaven picking out and trying on all of the clothes and stepping out to model them. Having Marc’s opinion and approval made it all so special and meaningful.”

Ten points for Marc Jacobs – just because you’re a fashionista doesn’t mean you’re not also a good person.
