>> Elle Offices Hit By Bedbugs -Elle editors have been working from home this week after bedbugs were found at the magazine's offices at 50th Street and Broadway. Parent company Hachette Filipacchi alerted employees with a memo Tuesday, saying that "a specially trained sniffing beagle was brought in to confirm" the infestation and the problem area was treated. A followup memo sent out Wednesday night told Elle staff to stay home until Monday. This morning, Elle.com editorial director Keith Pollock Tweeted, "Do I have bedbug bites on my face, or has the potential threat of getting bitten caused a break out? I'm flea-ing NY."  [NY Post, @MrPollock]

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that September fashion magazine covers are the most important of the year. With fall just around the bend, September issues are packed to the brim with the newest trends. (They’re also packed with advertisements, essential to a magazine’s survival.)

And if there’s one thing you can say about this year’s September covers, it’s that the good covers are great and the bad ones are truly horrible. Notably absent from the bunch are Vogue Paris and Vogue Italia, whose cover images have not surfaced yet, but are sure not to disappoint.

>> There's more TV coming up from Joe Zee. In addition to his regular appearances on MTV's The City, Zee is getting a new show, All On the Line, to be aired on the Sundance Channel in 2011.

Each of the show's eight episodes will portray a new fashion designer in crisis, with Zee stepping in to provide "tough love" and "make or break [the designer's] dreams," according to the Sundance Channel. Zee, who will serve as a mentor to the designers and host of the show, will help the designers fix the problems with their collections and prepare to present for a buyer. “It’s about helping them get to the next level,” Zee said. “I will be here to lend my expertise." The program is in the middle of casting, according to Zee, who will also serve as a producer for the show.

Joe Zee Gets His Own TV Show

Aug

With the fate of The City in question (the NY Times recently reported that MTV was still pondering whether or not to renew) Elle’s Joe Zee is moving on. WWD says that the creative director will star in an eight-episode series on the Sundance Channel called All On the Line, in which he will help struggling designers revamp their collections.

We love Joe, and we love what Sundance has done with its Full Frontal Fashion series, so this all sounds fantastic to us. Especially if he ends up running around New York City in a furry outfit.

That Same Miu Miu Dress Lands Yet Another Cover Thanks To The “Wily Foxes” At Miu Miu’s Press Office

Jul

Step aside Kate Moss and move over Gwyneth, there’s a new cover star and it’s this appliqued Miu Miu dress.

Last week, the Guardian noticed that variations of the same Miu Miu dress was on the August covers of W, British Vogue and British Elle. A Miu Miu hat trick if you will. But the dress is also on the cover of Swedish Elle’s August issue, a reader pointed out.

Swedish Elle had a little fun with this, and put up their own post pointing out that they’d been left out of the Guardian article, polling their readers to pick their favorite cover. Of course, this is what I’m deducting from just looking at their blog post and using Google translator as I don’t speak Swedish (Swedes help me out!).

According to Google translator, the post reads, “As the Guardian notes are not Miu Miu’s press office wily foxes, usually takes one full of clothes for each shoot and there is no predetermined timing and what lands on the cover.”

As much as we’re tickled by the description of Miu Miu’s PR as “wily foxes,” the point the Guardian makes is that a lot goes into a cover shoot, including lots and lots of clothing options, so it’s likely dumb luck that the same Miu Miu dress landed four glossy covers.

Nevertheless, four covers in one month is quite a feat. It seems strange that the dress was used for the cover of two Elle publications. However, Elle has 28 international editions, including Slovenia and Thailand, so they probably don’t compare notes on their covers every month. Thank goodness our readers are around to notice such things.

>> Although Stefano's Tonchi first full front-to-back issue of W doesn't come out until September, the magazine's August 2010 cover brings a first look at what's to come. Tonchi has brought his taste for featuring lesser-known actors and actresses to W - his first cover features Mad Men's Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall (who costars with Hamm in Ben Affleck's upcoming crime drama The Town), shot by lesser-known photographer Nathaniel Goldberg (the W of yesteryear largely featured cover photos by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Steven Klein, and their ilk).

Rumor: MTV Has Canceled The City

Jun
No Comments   Posted by Lauren Sherman |  Category:Fashion

Rumor has it that MTV has canceled (seemingly) successful scripted reality series The City. The current season, which airs on Tuesdays at 10.30pm EST, will be its last.

The City, a spin-off of the The Hills, which was a spin-off of Laguna Beach, documents the “life” of Whitney Port, a young designer trying to make it in New York. It mostly takes place at real-life fashion industry companies, including Kelly Cutrone’s public relations firm People’s Revolution and Elle magazine, where main characters Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo “work.” (Kaplan does indeed work full time at Elle, Palermo does not.)

In general, we’re a bit surprised by this news.

The City seems genuinely popular, and even if it doesn’t pull in ratings equivalent to those of The Hills (which is also ending this season), it’s much buzzier. For a brand like MTV, it seems like it’d be worth sacrificing some ratings for press.

But we guess that’s not the case in this circumstance. We’re also guessing that, Palermo, who has become a celebrity outside of her work on The City, is “over” the show, as is Whitney Port, who is very serious about her fashion career, even if the rest of the world isn’t.
