Who Is Your Favorite Model, and Why?

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Lilit Marcus |  Category:Fashion

A lot of people have favorite models. But what is it about a particular woman that makes you always want to look at pictures of them or buy products that they endorse? Everyone has their own conscious or subconscious reasons. So let me tell you about my favorite model and we can go from there.

When I was in high school, I was really skinny. That may sound awesome to some people, but I grew up in the South, where the ideal female figure was curvy and buxom. Compared to the pretty girls at my school, I looked like a boy. For awhile, I ate protein bars and junk food and tried to fatten myself up in any way I could, without realizing how hard it was to completely change your basic body type. But the first time I saw a picture of Stella Tennant in Vogue (probably when she was the face of Chanel), something changed. Here was this woman with a slender, boyish figure and angular facial features who was not only beautiful but being photographed for one of the greatest fashion magazines in the world.

Stella Tennant isn’t my favorite model because I look like her. We bear a very slight passing resemblance, but no one will ever stop me in the street thinking I am her. For one thing, she’s about six inches taller than me. My eyes are brown; hers blue.  But my affection for her comes from the fact that she’s like an extreme, much more beautiful version of myself. There’s no chance of me ever getting a makeover and looking like Bar Refaeli or Veruschka. But in a wonderful fantasy universe, it’s somewhat more plausible that I could be Stella Tennant someday – it would require a haircut and maybe a nose ring, but not plastic surgery. That’s fashion escapism at its best – I may not look like this woman, but I don’t look completely unlike her either.

Do you have a favorite model? If so, who is it and why?

Crystal Renn’s New Chanel Campaign Is “The Proudest Moment of Her Life”

Aug

>> Karl Lagerfeld snapped Baptiste Giabiconi and Crystal Renn in what her is her first campaign for Chanel - to promote the reopening of the brand's store in Soho, Manhattan, in September.

The shoot happened a couple of months ago in a Paris studio, and Lagerfeld asked the two models to envision themselves as lovers in a glamorous movie. “He said, ‘You’re not a model right now, you’re an actress,'" Renn told Fashionista. "The only difference between modeling and acting is that models have one second to tell a story and actresses have two hours.”

Crystal Renn on Her New Chanel Campaign

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Leah Chernikoff |  Category:Fashion

Perennial model-in-the-spotlight Crystal Renn stars in Chanel’s newest campaign for the reopening of the brand’s SoHo store, and we got her reaction to the campaign just minutes after she had seen it herself.

“I’m absolutely freaking out,” she told us. “Working with Chanel has been my dream forever. As long as I’ve been working as a model I’ve been thinking about Chanel and working towards Chanel and this campaign is the proudest moment of my life.”

While Renn’s most recent campaigns (including that notorious retouched shoot for nonprofit Passion For Fashion) have brought attention to the so-called “plus size” model’s shifting body size, her latest print work for Chanel focuses on the model’s gorgeous face while a sultry Baptiste Giabiconi reclines topless in the background.

Renn believes her latest coup speaks to positive changes in the industry.

“I think the fashion industry is changing and is more open to a new ideal,” says Renn. “It’s about a personality and a moment captured..it’s not about body size it’s about talent and effort…I hope the industry sees this [campaign] as an example of that.”

As for that retouching scandal that landed her on the Today show? “Retouching happens,” says Renn. “It’s happened to other actresses and models and a lot of times models won’t come forward and they’re even relieved to be retouched. Don’t get me wrong, I love retouching but I”m very proud of my body and to portray me as a size zero or a two when I’m a ten, that’s inaccurate and I was concerned with how people who look up to me would see those ads.”

But she’s moved on. This is the second time Renn has worked with Lagerfeld (she walked in his 2011 resort show in Saint Tropez), and she sees no reason why the partnership won’t continue.

“Karl is a genius,” Renn says. “He’s a Virgo so we’re compatible and we got on really well.”

For the campaign, which was shot in a studio in Paris a few months ago, Lagerfeld asked Renn and Giabiconi to envision themselves as lovers in a glamorous movie. “He said, ‘You’re not a model right now, you’re an actress,’…the only difference between modeling and acting is that models have one second to tell a story and actresses have two hours.”

And acting as if Giabiconi was her lover was, shockingly, not so hard to do. “He is the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen hands down,” Renn gushes. “I remember being on set and trying not to stare but staring at him methodically nonetheless to try to figure out how perfection in a male looks. It’s insane when you look at him. ”

So, we had to ask, is the next step for Renn acting?

“I haven’t been actively seeking acting roles but if the right opportunity came up, absolutely,” says Renn. The right part for Renn would be something dark and intense and challenging–no RoCo’s for this chick. We’d shell out $12 to see her on the big screen.

These Chanel Ombres Contraste Duo Eyeshadows Are Smooth Operators

chanel ombres contraste eyeshadow duo review swatches top

Chanel should have issued a warning with their new $42 Ombres Contraste Duos: “Caution: The contents of this compact may be hard to resist!” :)

Seriously, you might want to steel yourself against potential temptation and simply stop reading now.

The part of me that loves elegantly effortless makeup just can’t get enough of these eyeshadow duos. The six of them make me feel like screaming, “Gimme, gimme more!”

This fall luxurious textures and intense pigments have been all the rage among the high-end makeup lines (hello, Givenchy Le Prisme Quartets!), and while these duos may not look the part at first, they’re no exception.

Each one comes with a light cream shadow designed to be used as a base and a darker powder matte shadow for contouring and creating the illusion of depth.

Conveniently, skin is where these products really POP! — both in terms of color and texture — and being as smooth as they are makes them remarkably easy to blend.

In the look below I’m wearing Khaki (a matte dark green) from the Khaki-Clair duo. In it I’m barely wearing any, yet the ample pigmentation makes the color pretty hard to miss. BONUS: These leave behind absolutely no shadow fallout whatsoever — zip, zero, zilch.

Do I Really Want Chanel’s Paradoxal Nail Polish? Or Do I Just Think I Do?

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Cheryl Wischhover |  Category:Fashion

I’ve been away on a little summer holiday, a huge part of which has been spent on a chair under an umbrella reading every single August and September fashion and beauty mag I can get my hands on. Therefore I’ve been unwittingly under the influence of fashion and beauty editors. So far they’ve told me that I will be wearing high waisted camel trousers, fur vests, and the fall version of clogs. In general, I will look very ladylike.

They’ve also told me that Chanel Paradoxal is the color to have on my fingertips. Chanel has been generally acknowledged as the lacquer leader ever since Vamp ruled the universe in 1994. Allure reported that a bottle of 2006’s Black Satin went for $140 on eBay. This summer everyone’s toes (including mine) were covered in Nouvelle Vague or some other brand’s version of that summery turquoise.

But Paradoxal is purple. Sparkly purple. Not generally a favorite color of mine. Yet a little voice in my head keeps saying, “But you have to try it. It’s the new Chanel!”

Much as we like to think we are individuals with our own sense of style, how much are we actually influenced by the fashion media or by preconceived notions of what the “best” brands are?

I’ll let you know this fall when I’m sporting my new Paradoxal manicure because it looked so fantastic on everyone at Fashion Week.

Paradoxal is available at Bergdorf Goodman now. Maybe I’ll get the Blue Satin instead.

5 Classic Handbags That Are Worth The Investment

Aug
No Comments   Posted by Dhani Mau |  Category:Fashion

A reader came to us with what we imagine to be a fairly common dilemma: She wants to invest in a quality designer handbag, but also wants to make sure she picks one that is worth the exorbitant price tag. We think handbags are a little more important than other “investment pieces” (like shoes) and thus require even more careful consideration.

Unless you can afford to buy a new it bag every season, you want one that will withstand the passing of trends and continue to look amazing for years to come. We also think it’s important that you really, really love it and aren’t just buying it for status or–not that we think we have that much influence–because it’s on this list.

Also, remember that just because it’s marked down doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the bag for you. Lauren advises, “Don’t buy a bag that’s on sale unless it’s the one you really want. If you’re going to spend a lot of money regardless, pay full price for something you’ll love for a long time. I know from experience.” Here are five very expensive but, in our opinion, very worth it, handbags.
