Ateliers Arthur Fall 2010 Sneakers

Following the Ourasi high top, up start sneaker brand Ateliers Arthur offers a look into three different lower cut styles from their debut collection. Up top is the Optimus, in full-grain nappa leather with patent leather toe cap options. Second in line is the Padre, in full-grain nappa leather with some casual, nautical influences. Last but not least is the Monk, a mid-cut silo featured in pigskin suede with a full-grain nappa leather velcro strap. Look for these come Fall 2010.

In case you haven't noticed, that whole Pollack-y paint splatter thing is having a moment now, and these new "Replica" line sneakers—a collaboration between disheveled-but-sharp master Maison Martin Margiela and Barney's New York—are one way the trend is being done right. MMM took their classic lace-less trainers, which were originally pulled on by West German soldiers in the 70s, and updated them a bit with some methodically aimless strokes of matte paint. Paris Fashion Week Fall 2010: Supermodels Return to the Runway at Louis Vuitton

In New York last month, Marc Jacobs broke the unwritten rules of the runway and chose a handful of real women to model his fall 2010 looks. Today in Paris, where he showed his collection for Louis Vuitton, the designer went in the opposite direction, casting models of the “super” variety. Laetitia Casta opened the show, while model icon Elle Macpherson ended it. In between, Bar Rafaeli, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima walked the circular runway wearing silhouettes that highlight their womanly curves (hips and all). Cleavage was on full display thanks to Marilyn Monroe-esque corset dresses with full swinging skirts. I loved seeing curvier models on the catwalk. Do you agree?

Rompers Suck.

Sure, I love rompers … on five year olds. However, if you’re at an age when there’s no longer a risk that you will pull your skirt up to your waist and wave it back and forth at the sandbox, then maybe you should just wear a dress. You know, like a grown up. Or pants! Pants work too.

Why do rompers exist? Seriously, did someone just decide “I am not competent enough to put on both shorts and a shirt” and had to stitch them all together? And don’t tell me, “a romper is great because it’s a coordinated outfit all in one!” So is a dress. So are pants a shirt that you took five minutes to coordinate – if you want your outfit to look like a romper, you can buy the pants and the shirt in the exact same fabric. Wait, that would look silly. Oh. Right.

But at least you’d be able to go to the restroom without peeling your entire body out of your garment. Wearing a romper is like being stuck in a one-piece swimsuit every time you go to the bathroom. But maybe they’ll make you looking amazing!

Except that they won’t. Most of the rompers I see (with the exception of ones being worn by stick thin models, and if you are a stick thin model, you can wear pretty much anything and look okay) aren’t making anyone’s figure look all that great. Which sort of makes sense – I imagine the designer has to imagine how the entirety of, say, a size 8 woman’s body looks, rather than just her top. Or her bottom. Sure, that’s sort of the case with a dress, too, but a slightly flowing skirt is going to give you some leeway. And, unfortunately, people are often say, a size 6 on top, a size 8 on the bottom.

The end result is that, unless your body is exactly the same size all the way through is that some portion of the romper does not fit properly. This is why every time one of your friends tries on a romper they say something to the effect of “it was cute, but the shorts were way too short. But I bought it anyway, because I make bad decisions.” They don’t really say that about the bad decisions though, because somehow, they see it as being okay that one entire part of the outfit fits the wrong way. This does not happen when you buy a shirt and a pair of pants. If the pants don’t fit right, you don’t buy them. If the top doesn’t fit right, you don’t buy it. This is obvious buying-things logic.

But it’s not just that the fit on them always seems to be slightly off. I think the thing about them that makes me cringe most is that they’re a ridiculously infantilizing fashion statement. They basically say “I am still a playful little girl at heart, I just want to caper with you during playtime. Math is hard!” I think for me this sentiment gets reinforced by the frequency with which women who are supposed to appear childlike and unthreatening are thrust into jumpers – remember Chrissy from Three’s Company? That girl was always in a romper. With pigtails. Do you see Meryl Streep in a romper? No. You do not. Try to imagine Hillary Clinton in a Romper. Actually, don’t. It will make your head explode.

Oh, okay, fine, those women are not commonly accepted “style icons”. Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn would eat a plate full of tacks before wearing a romper. I hope. It is at least reassuringly difficult to imagine her wearing one. Unfortunately, I can picture Katherine Hepburn in one, but I’m willing to chalk that up to her loving pants and being thrust into one by a manager who thought it seemed more ladylike.

That’s why the only adjective that ever describes a romper is “cute.” No one ever calls it sleek. Or sophisticated. Well, I suppose some people do but those are either a) fashion writers picking adjectives out of a hat or b) idiots. That’s because it almost never (an exception is made for Dita von Teese, because an exception is always made for Dita von Teese) looks like either of those things. Best case scenario, it has a sort of childlike appeal, worst case scenario, you look like trailer trash, and, by the way, your top is about to fall off.

You don’t need to look that saccharine, kitschy cute. You’re not a kindergartner. You don’t need someone to pre-coordinate shorts and a shirt for you. Nor do you need to be going through an elaborate disrobing ritual every time you visit the restroom. You’re an adult. Dress like one.

I am in love. Valentino continues to make me a happy handbag fan. Yes, in the past, I’ve snubbed Valentino and thought that some bags were less than impressive. Today is not that kind of day. I am highly impressed with this Valentino Glam Tote. In fact, if I had some cash saved up, I would have bought it on the spot.

Before I get started, I must say, I really wish that Bergdorf Goodman would have larger images of products they carry available. However, luckily, they do have a zoom function. This zoom function has allowed me to fall in love with this bag. If it wasn’t for that function, I probably would have passed the bag by. But instead, I was able to look at the bag a bit closer and completely admire the exquisite and intricate bead work.

This tote is comprised of nude napa leather and has double top handles. With the tote being as large as it is, I do wonder if slightly larger handles would do the bag a bit more justice, but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me. I wasn’t really interested in the drawstring sides, but I can let that go too. See, this bag, it is just downright gorgeous. The stripes of mini-studs and crystals intertwine splendidly. And since some of the studs and crystals happen to be on the two-layer ruffles along the front of the bag, there is a bit of movement. I can picture myself carrying this bag as I walk through a restaurant and the the light being reflected off of the studs and crystals – amazing. It typical Valentino fashion, this bag doesn’t come cheap, but like I said earlier, if I had money saved up, this bag would be mine! Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $2690.

That Chanel Iceberg Was Actually Made From ‘Snice’

Surprise! Yesterday's Chanel show was just as spendy as it looked. Some facts on that runway centerpiece, the greatest piece of ice since, well, maybe this:

1. It weighed 265 tons and stood 28 feet high.
2. It was imported from northern Sweden just for the show.
3. It was composed of snow and ice, a combination that is apparently called "snice" in Chanel Land. And you thought snowicane was bad!

4. The Grand Palais where the show took place was kept at four degrees below Celsius (about 28 Fahrenheit) to keep the ice piece — possibly attendees — from melting.
5. The 'berg was carved by 35 ice sculptors from around the world in six days.

But all the extravagance is the perfect mirror to the collection, which WWD reminds us "doesn't come cheap," even though Karl only used faux fur. Exorbitance is of little concern to Chanel. Last year's sales were reportedly the best in the label's history.

The Amazing Technicolor Makeup Artist

At first glance you would think makeup artist Sierra Luella is heavily influenced by the eighties. Not so! "I don't know too much about the eighties. I wasn't born till the nineties." Barcelona Day 4: Mango Headquarters/Design Center

For those that were waiting for posts on Barcelona, my apologies got stuck catching up when I got back. This is for the readers that have been asking me to post more about my trip, here ya go!

On day 4, 02.24.2010, of my trip, I was invited to visit Mango’s Design Center at their Headquarters. I was pretty excited about visiting but thought it would be like any other retail corporate office- I was wrong! When I first got there it looked like a warehouse outside and looked pretty plain but when I stepped foot inside, wow it was like an art gallery. The owner is a big art collector and nearly all the walls in the hallway were covered with large pieces of amazing art and the best thing is there’s always new ones swapped every so often to keep the designer’s inspirations going. Definitely not a dull place to work in, great design, lots of sunlight and lots of space. The cafeteria also has an outdoor patio for employees to relax and not feel like they’re trapped in an office environment, pretty chill. I wouldn’t mind working there, amazing! Thanks for the tour!

Target’s Liberty of London Collection Actually Lives Up to the Hype

Target is a branding powerhouse. Which is why it’s no surprise that this morning’s press preview for its Liberty of London pop-up shop (stationed right next to Bryant Park) was a cornucopia of the English garden variety.

We’re experiencing a bit of a heat wave in New York, so the floral-lined walls, pots of fabric flowers–and a green grass garden filled with dresses, shirts and kid’s clothes instead of tulips–were a welcome sight. As was the gigantic teapot, a nod to Liberty’s English heritage. I missed Naomi Watts, hired to open the store, but I did take advantage of the fresh fruit and coffee passed around.

As for the product? It’s good. Really, really good.

I’m not too into floral maxi dresses–which were abound–but I did pick up some nice lounge wear ($16.99 for bras) and a ton of boxers ($5.99 a pair) for my boyfriend. The kids clothes were incredible: Smocked rompers for girls and shorts for boys printed with tiny cars. And the housewares? Wow! I found plates, serving platters, and pillows in plenty of richly-colored floral prints. There was even an adorable umbrella with matching wellies. But the best bit–in my opinion–was the bike (it’s $199). I might actually buy one.

Yet here’s what’s more important: The fabric quality isn’t too bad. The difficult with Liberty of London is that the fabric is pretty expensive. Usually upward of $50 a yard at retail, sometimes quite a bit more. That’s why, before this, mid-priced brands like Steven Alan, APC–and even J.Crew–were more likely to use it in clothing.

But because Target buys in bulk–and Liberty is on a collaboration spree–things are affordable. (I did put in a call to Target’s press department to make sure the fabrics are actually from Liberty’s own mill. There’s a chance that the retailer licensed the prints for a certain period of time instead of buying the actually fabric, which would probably cost a lot less. I’ll let you know either way. UPDATE: Yes, these are Liberty prints on non-Liberty fabric, which explains the low prices.)

Regardless, it looks good. Because most of the clothing is cotton, there isn’t an obvious cheapness factor. While I haven’t had horrible luck with Target collabs in the past, it’s well-known that they aren’t always as stunning as they appear in the look book. This time around, you’ll be happy you sought it out.

The pop-up is open today until 8pm and March 11-March 13 from 9am to 8pm. But for those outside of New York, don’t fret: The full collection arrives in select stores nationwide this Sunday, March 14.

Mr. R-I-P Is Dressed to Kill

We ran across these stills from an upcoming video by hip-hop's ultra-witty punchline king, Fabolous, and gotta say: The guy who's been calling himself Mr. R-I-P looks righteous, and it's not just the cross and the Jesus piece. Cargo pants have ever-so-slowly been making a comeback since we all dismissed them as an oversized Abercrombie-Bro punchline, and the front-pocketed pair Fab's rocking here help heal the scars a little further. We're also feeling the elaborate military coat and the shades, which, upon further inspection, reveal themselves to be the same radical Louis Vuittons that Julian Casablancas wore in our own Rebel Style feature back in November.

Scientologists Hate People, Love Unnecessary Quotation ‘Marks’

News flash! Turns out The Church of Scientology “doesn’t treat their members” very well. According to the New York Times “article on the Scientologist Sea Org group” they force members to work for $17 a week and to have abortions, and members can’t complain because they signed “a billion year contract”. Obviously, it’s very sad to hear that any religious “organization takes advantage” of their members. However, judging from the use of “entirely unnecessary quotation marks” on their personality test form, all of which makes it appear that they are talking “entirely in code” well, the Sea Org members should have smelt something fishy to begin with. Here are some of our favorites:

46: Are you “always getting into trouble?”

56: Does “external noise” rarely interfere with your concentration?

71: Do you often “sit and think” about death, sickness, pain and sorrow?

73: Are you always collecting things which “might be useful”?

127. Can you get quite enthusiastic over “some simple little thing”?

159: Could you allow someone to finish those “final two words” in a crossword puzzle without interfering?

162: Would you like to “start a new activity” in the area in which you live?

170: Are you opposed to the “probation system” for criminals?

New Designers: Pedro Lourenço

A 19-year-old Sao Paulo native, already designing professionally since age 12, makes his Paris debut.

WHO: Pedro Lourenço. You read that right, he’s been a professional designer in Brazil since age 12, and staged fashion shows in his parents’ Sao Paulo home for years before. Since mom and dad are Gloria Coelho and Reinaldo Lourenço, two of Brazil’s leading designers, you could say precocious Pedro was born into his métier.

WHAT: For his first show outside of Sao Paulo, Lourenço sent out sharp, futuristic dresses, coats and pants made out of panels of leather, plastic, and grey double-faced wool felt. Leather and plastic strips sewn into beaded, venetian blind-like grids added extra dimension to many of the pieces. “I’m lucky that my parents have really good factories, but still, I was pushing, pushing, pushing the seamstresses on some of these techniques,” Lourenço says.

BONA FIDES: Lourenço took to sewing when he was still a toddler, and since the onset of adolescence, intermittently handled his mother’s diffusion line, Carlota Joakina. His parents swear up and down they never pushed him into his field. “In fact, we couldn’t have stopped him if we tried,” says Coelho. More recently, Lourenço spent a month working for Giambattista Valli in Paris.

HQ: Sao Paulo, with some operations being handled out of Paris.

INSPIRATIONS: “Diana the huntress, and also the architect Oscar Niemeyer,” says the designer. Familiarity breeds respect: Lourenço has spent much of his young life among Niemeyer’s stunning complex of buildings his hometown’s Parque Ibirapuera, where Sao Paulo Fashion Week is held.

POSSE: Lourenço’s front row was packed with all the fashion business bigs. Longtime supporters include Vanity Fair’s Michael Roberts, the Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch, stylist Brana Wolf (who worked on Lourenço’s show this season) and jewelry designer and style icon Judy Blame.

AMC’s Best Picture Showcase

For the first time since Casablanca scored the statue in 1943, ten films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture this year. For film lovers and Oscar handicappers overwhelmed by the increase, AMC offered a convenient solution: staged infive cities across the U.S. and Canada, The 4th Annual Best Picture Showcase (BPS) offered heliophobic moviegoers a chance to test their stamina—and popcorn capacity—and knock out all ten nominated films in one 24-hour shot. The New York City offering was held this past Saturday before the Oscars at the AMC Empire 25 in Times Square. My partner in crime and I decided to see if we had the mettle to see it through to the end.

Though daunting in scope, the audience’s exuberance kept spirits high through the early morning hours and transitioned into a good groove by the afternoon. Films began to flow by easily, and in no time we were breaking for dinner before the last two films. With the light at the end of the tunnel in sight, we cruised through the ninth film with ease. And while the last hour of the final film, The Hurt Locker, proved to, well, hurt, the prospect of accomplishment and the chance for sleep saw us through to the end. The next afternoon, after 12 hours of sleep, my viewing buddy and I felt confident in our newly-educated Oscar guesses. And after an undertaking like that, the awards show that always seemed endless in years tasted more like a cherry on top of our marathon sundae.
